Princess Tutu is absolutely the coolest thing I have EVER seen.
I am unable to say this in a way that makes nearly enough impact. For the love of all that is holy, if you have not seen Princess Tutu, do whatever you have to do to acquire and watch all of it RIGHT NOW because until you do, there will be a gaping hole in your existence that will never be filled any other way.
It starts out cute and endearing and intriguing and gradually becomes a charming knife twisting deeper and deeper into your soul. It's a metaphor for absolutely everything that has ever been important to me told in prose and ballet and the pictorial alphabet of fairy tales. It hurts better than anything I've seen in my entire adult life.
The viewer has his choice of avatars, each with their own tragedy which any human will relate to whether they want to or not. The story unfolds slowly and seductively and with truly misleading innocence and whimsy. It's too easy to tie yourself to the fate of your favorite character. Too easy to suffer nigh unto death with them. It pulls you in completely and the only way out really is through. Without the crutch of overly sentimental sap, it tells a story at the end of which the viewer feels like a better and wiser person.
You might be able to get it here. If not, try the usual sources, the guy at your local anime club who carries around the avi folder of DOOM, or the corner drug dealer.
