This story is a real departure for me.
It's the first fiction I've ever written in first person, for one thing. Sometimes it flows along very nicely, and other times it's very hard to stay in the skin of someone with as unique a worldview as the narrator of this story. One thing that's particularly difficult for me is the language. I've found myself typing some things that are shockingly unladylike. Anyone familiar with my work in the past will suspect how difficult that was for me at times.
But stories need to be told. This one has been on my mind for some time, and while I once promised myself that I would finish Martial Arts Marriage Ceremony before begining another project, this one wasn't willing to wait its turn.
I really am enjoying writing it, though.
It's interesting to watch it unfold. I thought at first that this
would be a rather depressing story -- one of the reasons I put off writing
it so long -- but have found instead that it is a story about hope.
I can no more disguise my natural optimism in this story than the main
character can disguise his. I mean, sure, he complains, but hopefully
it's obvious that he hasn't given up and that, despite everything, he still
believes in his heart that everything will turn out alright.
Many people have helped me with this story and given me good ideas and suggestions for improving and continuing it. In particular I'd like to thank my pre-readers thus far, Krista Perry, Anand Rao, and Gary Kleppe. They help keep me from looking terribly foolish when I post here or on the ffml as well as giving me encouragement. This would be a lot less fun without them.
Thanks also to all those who have written to comment or encourage in the past.
Anyway, enough long winded speeches from Michelle. I hope you enjoy this new story, and please feel free to write to me with any questions or comments you might have. I love hearing from fellow fans!
