The first fanfiction story I ever wrote is 'Waking Up.' I started it over five years ago right after I discovered fan culture on the internet. There are a lot of things about 'Waking Up' that I'm not really happy with anymore, and I've often thought about redoing it, but decided to let it stand as a first effort. When I get discouraged with my writing, I sometimes re-read it as a way of showing myself how far I've come as a writer, and reminding myself that there may still be a long ways to go, but that improvement isn't impossible if I practice.
